Opie gets in hot water when he enters an essay contest by writing a paper on the historic Battle of Mayberry, a famous fight between the settlers and the indians that established the town of Mayberry. After interviewing many descendents of the people involved, Opie learns that the battle was nothing more than a misunderstanding caused by too much liquor. The only casualties were one scrawny cow, three deer, and one mule that was mistaken for a deer.

"This is one of the few episodes of TAGS that features a minority--- Mr. Strongbow, an ancestor of Chief Strongbow of the Indian side of the "battle". The other was the time Aunt Bee went into partnership in the Chinese Restaurant business. " - SW FL guy from SW FL

"I kinda like this episode. I like the involvement of Goober and Floyd. I especially like any episode that didn't feature Warren. This one does not. Andy claims in this episode that Mayberry was almost named Taylortown after his ancestor. Andy takes Opie to Raleigh to study at thier library to find out the true story about the battle of Mayberry, there they find out that there was no battle but just an arguement between the settlers and the local indians which was quickly ramified by Mayberry and the indians getting drunk together. Once drunk they soon forget about their disagreement and decide to go hunting together where they accidentaly shoot a mule that "had the misfortune of looking like a deer". Opie wins the contest with his essay on the battle of Mayberry which totally debunks all local theories and facts about the battle. His story is published in the newspaper, to everyones dismay they find that their was no battle, just a drunken get together. The Governor of North Carolina makes a radio speech thereafter and congratulates Opie on his story and awards Mayberry with the courage to come clean and show the world that little problems can be overcome by working things out. The citizens of Mayberry are happy once again after hearing the speech and all is well again. " - Bryan Greaves from Colorado Springs, CO
